What can be done to solve the lack of teachers in schools?

About twenty thousand students started last year’s third period in schools without some classes due to a lack of teachers. How to respond to this imbalance and what can be done to respond to the lack of teachers in schools were starting points for the 3rd episode of Consulta Pública (Antena 1) with Luís Catela Nunes as the main guest.

“In this vertiginous and polarized world, it is becoming more and more important to stop to think and exchange ideas to think better. Antena 1 opens a “public appointment” (Consulta Pública) every month to enhance debate about today’s biggest topics.”. In this episode Antena 1 invites Luís Catela Nunes, Isabel Flores, Luísa Loura, Paulo Sucena e Cristina Gomes da Silva. Click here to listen to this episode.

Moreover, Luís Catela Nunes also participated in the seminar “Faltam professores! E agora?...” (We are lacking professors! What now?...), organized by the CNE- National Council of Education- to discuss the teacher recruitment needs for the next 10 years. He presented the results of the study with forecasts of the demand and supply of teachers for the 850 schools on the Portuguese mainland across different subjects and school years. The effect of a specialized versus a general upper-secondary school curriculum on students’ performance and inequality

Countries differ in their academic upper-secondary school systems whereby some require their students to choose a specialization track from a set of areas – typically natural sciences, economic sciences, or humanities – and follow that specialization for the course of their upper secondary education years whereas, by contrast, others follow a general curriculum in which students are not required to follow a single specialization and thus, may receive a more general education. This research estimates the possible effects on students’ achievement of these institutional differences.
