Nova SBE on the team of development of an Ocean degree (a world first!)

Antonieta Cunha e Sá, Economics Professor at Nova SBE, is part of the new Ocean degree core faculty

The "Ocean" Degree, presented during the Oceans Conference, has its approval to be submitted this month to the Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior. A three-year interdisciplinary course will be a world first and is a partnership between Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade do Algarve. Students will study topics related to the ocean to gain a transversal vision that allows them to work in the private or public sector, to help companies to position themselves by finding new forms of business, creating companies, or support institutions to design and consolidate public policies in the ocean area. To fulfill the course objective are also involved external partner entities, which will participate in the teaching of subjects ranging from oceanography to nautical space planning, going through interdisciplinary challenges related to the ocean or Law and Sustainability. The faculty team core members are Assunção Cristas (Nova School of Law) Júlia Seixas (FCT), Antonieta Cunha e Sá (Nova SBE), Regina Salvador (FCSH) and Roberto Henrique (IMS).

Zona de Impacto: Let´s talk about students’ evaluation? Are there any advantages to keeping national exams?

In the last two years, because of the covid-19 pandemic, national exams didn’t count for the conclusion of high school, only for access to college. Does it make sense that this turns into a rule from now on? This is analysed and debated in this episode of Zona de Impacto by the researcher and student of NovaSBE Catarina Ângelo and Pedro Freitas and teacher Ana Balcão Reis.

Early identification of students at risk of school success/failure in the 1st cycle of Basic Education

The educational institutions aim to define specific strategic plans and interventions that intend to promote success and prevent failure, requiring the necessary information to identify the students in need of these types of interventions.

Student selection and performance in higher education: admission exams vs. high school scores

In many countries, students are selected into higher education institutions based on their achievement at high school, measured by scores given by their teachers and obtained on final national exams. This paper compares these two measures in terms of their ability to predict students' success in higher education.

How can we bring innovation to the Higher Education system?

If we want to bring innovation to higher education we need to provide a multidisciplinary curricula that fosters creativity and dialogue before teaching how to deal with new technologies.

THE CHOICES OF

Zona de Impacto: Mentalities evolved; however, women are still discriminated in the job market. Why?

Statistics are known. Women have a higher qualification rate than men, but they receive less (for the same jobs) and are more precarious. When it is time to reach roles of responsibility, they have a harder life (and, as the companies get bigger, the worse it is). The topic is old, solutions take a long time to produce effects, and this worries the youth. Marta Everard and Rita Mendes, students at NovaSBE and members of the club Women on Board, explain how they perceive their labor’s future
