PhD Series: Meet Sara Almeida

Sara is a recent alumni of Nova SBE, having recently completed her PhD in Economics. In this video, you can listen to her testimony regarding not only the program itself, but also regarding her experience in using her thesis to answer impactful questions.

Olá, sou a Sara e acabei de terminar o doutoramento em Economia na Nova SBE.

Durante os últimos cinco anos, como parte de minha tese, tenho realizado investigação em saúde pública no Líbano, Indonésia e Brasil. No meu caso, a minha tese não é apenas uma tese em si, mas sim um conjunto de 4 estudos que focam diferentes desafios em contexto de conflito e pobreza e onde ainda existe o esforço para tentar alcançar uma cobertura universal de saúde.

Mais especificamente, estudei as interações entre as práticas tradicionais e a procura por serviços médicos de saúde para estudar como esses agentes podem ter um papel no futuro e, eventualmente, apoiar os serviços de saúde primários.

Também realizei um estudo de avaliação de impacto de uma política de transferência de custos em hospitais em contexto de conflito, onde mostro que transferir 10% do custo para os pacientes é suficiente para os fazer mudar a sua escolha do hospital a visitar.

Também examinei as diferenças de género na liderança familiar e estudei um ensaio clínico randomizado que consistia numa intervenção para combater o abuso de substâncias em adolescentes.

Uma das coisas que achei mais interessante durante o doutoramento foi a oportunidade e liberdade de escolher um tema e fazer perguntas, aplicando os métodos que aprendemos nos nossos estudos. Para isso, foi fundamental ter o apoio do meu supervisor que me manteve no caminho certo, que me fez avançar e pensar mais no meu trabalho.

No geral, olhando para trás, sinto que esta jornada teve muitos altos e baixos, foi difícil, mas no final sentimos que dedicámos o nosso tempo a algo que acreditamos valer a pena e isto é um privilégio em si.

Partnerships for Progress: The Role of Universities in Achieving the SDGs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

This paper was hold by students in the following of Global Impact Mindset: UN SDG Module of NOVA SBE. The article highlights the crucial role of partnerships between universities, governments, and communities in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The article argues that these partnerships can help universities in LMICs to address the challenges of expanding research and academic capacity while maintaining equitable access, promote equitable access to education and research, and design solutions that are responsive to the unique needs and challenges facing these groups. The article also emphasizes that universities in LMICs can act as a bridge between different sectors, facilitating collaboration and cooperation towards the common goal of sustainable development.
