In the pursuit of enhancing societal well-being, the Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE) has emerged as a trailblazer in health research through its Health Economics & Management Knowledge Center (NHEM). Dedicated to shedding light on pertinent health issues, NHEM has recently published two insightful reports, delving into unmet needs in healthcare and household spending in pharmacies in Portugal.

Unmet Needs in Healthcare: A Call to Action

NHEM's report on unmet needs in healthcare is a comprehensive exploration of the challenges faced by nearly 40% of the Portuguese population in accessing healthcare in 2019. Financial constraints, lengthy waiting times, and transportation hurdles emerged as significant barriers. Moreover, the report discerns specific vulnerable groups, including the elderly, low-income individuals, the unemployed, and rural residents. Offering more than just an analysis, the report provides strategic policy recommendations aimed at improving accessibility and equity in the Portuguese healthcare system.

Household Spending in Pharmacies: Navigating the Economic Landscape

The second report from NHEM examines household spending in pharmacies between 2000 and 2019, revealing a staggering 57% increase in real terms. Average annual expenditures reached 232 euros per household, showcasing a noteworthy economic shift. The report delves into the components of spending, highlighting prescription drugs as the primary expense, followed by over-the-counter drugs and other health products. The findings prompt a vital discussion on the implications for the sustainability and efficiency of Portugal's health system.
