NOVAFRICA Seminar: “Spillovers without Social Interactions in Urban Sanitation”

On Wednesday, February 27, at 2.30 pm, the NOVAFRICA Center welcomes Laura Schechter, from the University of Wisconsin, to present her work on Spillovers without Social Interactions in Urban Sanitation.

Abstract:

While there is substantial evidence that social network effects are important in encouraging technology adoption in rural environments, there is little evidence on these mechanisms in urban environments. We conduct a randomized controlled trial with 4000 households in urban Dakar to study four mechanisms which might explain spillovers which increase adoption of mechanized desludging in an urban environment: social pressure, reciprocity, learning from others, and increasing returns. We do not find evidence of social pressure, reciprocity, or learning from others. We do find evidence suggestive of increasing returns to scale: as more neighbors adopt more sanitary technologies, it seems to become more worthwhile for other households to adopt as well.

The importance of data and statistic analysis to the achievement of the SDGs

This paper was written, by a student, as a brief discussion of one of the topics presented in the Global Impact Mindset: UN SDG Module of NOVA SBE. The importance of Data for the achievement of the SDGs is a consensual topic over demographic and organs. Decision-makers require data and statistics that are precise, timely, suitably disaggregated, pertinent, available, and simple to use to properly implement and track progress on the SDGs. Over time, both the quantity and quality of data have gradually increased. Data literacy must be improved at all levels of decision-making, and statistical competence still needs to be strengthened. The data producers and users from various data systems will need to work together on this. In order to solve the complex issues surrounding sustainable development, it will also be necessary to create new methods for producing and using data and statistics.

The importance of bees on our planet

Insect pollinators are a key element for the equilibrium of the ecosystems that surround us, and bees are an important subgroup because they are responsible for pollinating around 60 to 70 % of the world's total flowering plant species. However, extinction rates have jumped from 100 to 1000 times the normal rates because of many external conditions, like climate change, urbanization. At this point, the questions are the following: is the importance of these little in-sects clear to our society? And, are any measures being developed to avoid these risks?
