How will FinTech impact financial services and society?

FinTech in Iberia and sub-Saharan Africa Report. This is the first output of the FinTech Initiative, a joint partnership between Nova SBE Finance Knowledge Center and Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center, under the Social Equity Initiative, promoted by BPI | Foundation "la Caixa".

The Nova SBE Finance Knowledge Center conducts the Fintech Initiative. This initiative aims to develop research and education on how FinTech is going to change the financial services industry, such as commercial banking, investment banking, and asset management. It also aims to promote and disseminate research and knowledge of FinTech in Society, namely its impact on financial literacy and inclusion.

Key topics

  • Mobile money products and the use of technology to increase the efficiency of market infrastructures.
  • Using transaction data and social network data to improve credit appraisals and access to credit.
  • How to automate and disseminate affordable investment advice using technology.
  • Deposits, lending and capital raising (crowd funding, peer to peer lending, micro-credit, and internet-onlybanks).

The first output of this initiative –the FinTech Report - looks at the FinTech ecosystem in Portugal and Spain (Iberia) in an attempt to shed some light on the size and characteristics of the FinTech market in this particular geography. To do so, the report starts by presenting the Global and European FinTech ecosystems and diving deeper into the Iberian FinTech ecosystem. In this part, the report will contain information regarding sectors, market share, financial data, and presentations of the top players from Portugal and Spain and interviews with FinTechs and financial institutions. The goal of this report is to understand the IberianFinTech ecosystem and the future of FinTechs in the region.

This report was written by three Master's in Finance students, under the supervision of Afonso Eça, Assistant Professor, Miguel Ferreira, BPI | Fundação la Caixa Chair Professor in Responsible Finance and Cátia Batista, Associate Professor of Economics and co-Founder and Scientific Director of the Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center.
