Fleeing migrants. "These people are desperate"

Cátia Batista, scientific director of the Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center, calls for policies to welcome and integrate migrants.

A group of 17 illegal migrants fled, at dawn on Thursday, from the army barracks in Tavira. They were undergoing prophylactic isolation after two cases of covid-19 were detected in the group that arrived to Algarve in September.

For Cátia Batista, there is an urgent need to create policies capable of promoting the social integration of migrants to avoid “dramatic situations” like this one, especially during the pandemic, so that migrants who want to come to Europe can do so legally and without taking extreme risks.

The professor and founding and scientific director of Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center, believes that these Moroccan migrants must want to stay in Europe and have fled to avoid being deported. He also says that many come looking for work and a “happy life” after leaving North Africa, very affected by the crisis caused by the pandemic and also by the climate crisis.
