Conquering Cancer: Mission Impossible

Pedro Pita Barros, Nova SBE Health Economics & Management KC Scientific Director, is a member of the Mission Board for EU Mission on Cancer, developed under the Horizon Europe Framework Programme for Research and Innovation with an ambitious goal: “By 2030, more than 3 million lives saved, living longer and better”.

As an integral part of the Horizon Europe Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (2021- 2027), a set of European Research and Innovation Missions aim to deliver solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing Europe. Cancer is one of these challenges. This Mission outline explains how a mission-driven approach can save and improve the lives of millions of European citizens exposed to cancer and its risk factors. It sets out the goal of the Mission on Cancer and makes recommendations on how to achieve this goal.

Pedro Pita Barros, Nova SBE Health Economics & Management Knowledge Center Scientific Director, is a member of the Mission Board for EU Mission on Cancer and works as an Ambassador of the Mission Board for Cyprus, Portugal and Spain. The Mission Board delivered in September 2020 its recommendations for a Cancer Mission objectives and initiatives to the European Commission. The Mission Board is currently working toward concrete actions to be suggested, under Horizon Europe and under policy-oriented actions.

Europeans know and act on WHO recommendations during COVID-19

The World Health Organization recommended a range of preventative behaviors to protect the public from COVID-19. This column examines how familiar and compliant the adult population of seven European countries were with WHO’s recommendations. Using individual-level data from 7,000 respondents to an online survey conducted in April 2020, the study finds that information from WHO in the context of COVID-19 was well trusted and largely followed, with heterogeneities by recommendation type, country, and individual level characteristics such as region, age, gender, and education.

Tech giants rely on business models which effectively grant them monopoly power over a cross-section of markets, with the adverse effects of monopolies being amplified by the negligible regulatory action taken against them. This research insight takes Lina Khan’s “Amazon’s Antitrust Paradox” and expands on the rationale for a new antitrust policy while listing some of the potential concerns digital health applications produced by these giants or their partner firms entail.

It is important to recognize the potential of technology in the contribution it can make to increase health literacy. However, as with the news, one must look at the source of the content and say: no to fake news, yes to scientific evidence.
